Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA) is pleased to announce the addition of a new 1-day workshop for February. Intro to Memoir Writing Workshop will be presented on Tuesday, February 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Center. Instructing the class with be Emily Rich, Editor of the Delmarva Review.
This workshop will explore what takes a piece of personal writing from “draft to craft.” It will look at the elements of character development, incorporating sensory detail and writing in scenes. The class will stress that having a great story is only the first step to writing a compelling piece of memoir. The focus will be on the importance of taking a story that’s true and connecting it, as American memoirist, novelist, and essayist Cheryl Strayed says, “…to the greater, grander truth.”
Emily Rich is the Editor of Delmarva Review, a literary journal published on the Eastern Shore. She writes mainly memoir and essay. Her work has been published in a number of small presses including Little Patuxent Review, Delmarva Review, the Pinch and Hippocampus. Her essays have been listed as notables in Best American Essays 2014 and 2015, and her story “Black Market Pall Malls” won the Biostories 2015 War and Peace essay contest.
The fee for this workshop is $35 for DCA members and $75 for non-members of DCA. Register by calling 410-228-7782.
